What Is Evaluated

• Root collar condition, including girdling roots and buried or altered root flares
• Visible root damage from construction, trenching, grading, or equipment traffic
• Soil compaction and its effect on root growth and water movement
• Drainage conditions, including standing water and persistently saturated soil
• Suitability of a site's soil conditions for new plantings
• Mitigation recommendations where roots conflict with sidewalks, driveways, foundations, or utilities.

Buried Root Flare

A buried root flare is the natural widening at the base of the trunk that has been covered by soil, mulch, or fill, often during landscaping, construction, or planting. Burying the flare can trap moisture against the trunk and prevent the tree from breathing properly.

Root-Infrastructure Conflicts

Roots causing sidewalk or pavement damage can't simply be cut as a routine solution. The size, location, and structural significance of the roots involved, along with the tree's species, condition, and the infrastructure constraints, all need to be evaluated first, since removing the wrong roots can destabilize the tree.

Root Excavation

Root excavation, often using an air-spade, exposes root structure without damaging it, so conditions like girdling roots, decay, or a buried flare can be directly examined and used to decide what corrective options are feasible.

Grade Changes

Changing the soil level around a tree can cause problems in both directions. Adding soil over the root zone can suffocate roots and bury the flare, while removing soil can expose and damage roots. Both raised and lowered grades near a tree's root zone should be evaluated before work begins.

When Root and Soil Consulting Is Needed

Root and soil consulting is commonly requested when:

• A tree's canopy is declining without an obvious cause visible above ground
• Construction, trenching, or grading has occurred near a tree's root zone
• A tree is planted in compacted, poorly draining, or altered soil
• Roots are lifting sidewalks, driveways, or foundations
• A new planting site needs to be evaluated before installation
• Root collar or root flare conditions are unclear from a visual inspection alone

Methodology and Scope

Root and soil evaluations may include root collar excavation, soil probing, and, where warranted, air-spade investigation to expose root structure without damaging it. Findings reflect conditions observable at the time of evaluation. Root systems change over time, and remediation recommendations are scaled to what the site and the tree's condition actually support.

Deliverables

Root and soil evaluations are documented in a clear written format suitable for reference, planning, and recordkeeping, including recommendations for remediation, monitoring, or further investigation where warranted.
