Tree health assessments evaluate soil conditions, foliage quality, pest and disease activity, root health, and environmental stressors to determine what your tree needs and whether it can realistically recover.
Trees often show early warning signs of stress well before major decline. Light green leaves, canopy thinning, early leaf drop, tip dieback, or fungal growth are indicators that something is wrong. Health evaluations go beyond surface symptoms, using scientific methods and tools, including root collar excavation and soil probes, to identify observed symptoms and likely contributing factors rather than guessing. Some conditions, such as soil chemistry, salts, herbicide exposure, or pathogen activity, may require further lab testing before a cause can be confirmed. What a Health Assessment Includes
Every health assessment begins with a visual inspection of the environment around your tree, the canopy, trunk, and the root flare, followed by closer examination of any areas showing signs of stress. Depending on our initial observations, specific tools may be used to check for internal decay, root collar depth, girdling roots or soil compaction and drainage.
Each assessment concludes with a verbal or written report describing observed symptoms and likely contributing factors, along with any further testing recommended to confirm a probable cause. A clear set of recommendations, such as a remediation plan, continued monitoring, pruning, or removal are included, based on the tree's realistic recovery potential.
Health Assessment vs. Risk Assessment
A health assessment answers "how is this tree doing, and why?" A risk assessment answers "could this tree or a part of it fail, and what would happen if it did?" A tree can be structurally sound but declining in health, or healthy in appearance but carrying a structural defect. Many situations call for both, and we'll tell you if that's the case. If your primary concern is whether a tree or branch could fail, a Tree Risk Assessment is the more relevant service.
Root and Soil Conditions

Will you also tell me if a tree is a safety risk?
If we observe something during a health assessment that raises a structural concern, we'll document and disclose it. Our assessments aren't limited to a single narrow question if something relevant to your safety comes up along the way. If a complete tree risk assessment is required for municipal or HOA approval, there would be a charge for the added documentation.
Do you treat the problems you find?
ArborManagers generally provides assessments and documentation only. If a health issue calls for treatment, root work, fertilization, or pest management, we'll explain what we found and what the options generally involve, so you can make an informed decision with whoever you choose to hire.
How much does a tree health assessment cost?
Pricing starts at $150 per site visit for residential and commercial properties, increasing based on the number of trees involved and whether written documentation is needed. Ask for a quote up front.
When should I get a health assessment instead of just waiting to see if the tree recovers?
Early assessment is generally cheaper than the alternative. Many health issues are easier and less costly to address in their early stages, and some conditions that look minor from the ground can indicate a more advanced problem underneath. If a tree's appearance has changed and you're not sure why, that's usually reason enough to have it looked at.
