What a Health Assessment Includes
Every health assessment begins with a visual inspection of the environment, canopy, trunk, and root flare, followed by closer examination of any areas showing signs of stress. Depending on our observations, specific tools may be used to check for internal decay, the root collar may be excavated to inspect for girdling roots or a buried root flare, or soil samples may be taken to evaluate compaction and drainage.
Each assessment concludes with a written report identifying any underlying causes of decline that were found. A clear set of recommendations, such as treatment, continued monitoring, or removal are included, based on what the tree should realistically recover from.

It's focused on how healthy the tree is, not whether it's at risk of failing structurally. If structural risk is the concern, a tree risk assessment is the more relevant service.
How is a health assessment different from a risk assessment?
A health assessment answers "how is this tree doing, and why?" A risk assessment answers "could this tree or a part of it fail, and what would happen if it did?" A tree can be structurally sound but declining in health, or healthy in appearance but carrying a structural defect. Many situations call for both, and we'll tell you if that's the case.
What signs might mean a tree needs a health assessment?
Thinning canopy, undersized or discolored leaves, dieback in the upper branches, fungal growth at the base or on the trunk, unusual leaf drop outside of normal seasonal patterns, or a tree that simply looks different than it did a year or two ago. Some of these are visible from the ground; others require a closer inspection to identify.
Will you also tell me if a tree is a safety risk?
If we observe something during a health assessment that raises a structural concern, we'll document and disclose it. Our assessments aren't limited to a single narrow question if something relevant to your safety comes up along the way. If a complete tree risk assessment is required for municipal or HOA approval, there would be a charge for the added documentation.
Do you treat the problems you find?
ArborManagers generally provides assessments and documentation only. If a health issue calls for treatment, root work, fertilization, or pest management, we'll explain what we found and what the options generally involve, so you can make an informed decision with whoever you choose to hire.
How long does a tree health assessment take?
Most residential assessments take under an hour on-site, depending on the number of trees and whether closer inspection or additional documentation is needed. Larger properties, commercial sites, or assessments involving several trees take longer.

When should I get a health assessment instead of just waiting to see if the tree recovers?
Early assessment is generally cheaper than the alternative. Many health issues are easier and less costly to address in their early stages, and some conditions that look minor from the ground can indicate a more advanced problem underneath.
