The City of Ocala has its own tree permit requirements that apply within city limits, separate from Marion County's ordinance. Understanding which applies to your property is the first step in any tree-related project.
A permit is required for any tree 4 inches in diameter or greater, regardless of species or condition - with an exception for parcels zoned R-1 that are less than 3 acres and occupied by an existing single-family residence. Tree permit applications are handled by the City's Growth Management Department.
Florida Statute 163.045 provides an alternative path for residential property owners whose trees are documented as dangerous by an ISA Certified Arborist. That written arborist opinion can eliminate the need for a standard permit. Arbor Managers provides that documentation for Ocala homeowners.
When unauthorized tree removal occurs, property owners may be required to plant replacement trees equal to twice the DBH inches removed, or contribute to the City's Tree Mitigation Fund if on-site planting is impractical.
