Unlike live oaks, laurel oaks are relatively short-lived, typically 50 to 70 years in urban settings, and they are prone to internal decay that develops silently behind an otherwise healthy-looking exterior. What to look for
The earliest signs of laurel oak decline are often subtle. Sparse or off-color foliage in the upper canopy is one of the first indicators. Mushrooms or fungal growth at the base of the trunk signal internal decay. Cracks or splits in major limbs, deadwood accumulating in the canopy, and leaning are all common tree defects that warrant a professional assessment.

Internal decay in laurel oaks is frequently caused by fungal pathogens that enter through wounds, pruning cuts, or root damage. The decay progresses from the inside out, leaving the outer wood intact while the structural core deteriorates. A tree can appear sound from outside while carrying significant internal failure risk.
