Nutrient deficiencies
Potassium and manganese deficiencies are common in Florida palms and can lead to a slow, lethal decline if left uncorrected. These deficiencies show up as discoloration and frond dieback that is easy to mistake for normal aging, but left untreated they can progress to the point of no recovery.
Sudden trunk failure
Unlike a hardwood tree, a palm can fail suddenly, with little external warning, when internal decay or a severe nutrient deficiency has compromised the trunk. This is part of why routine evaluation matters more for palms near homes, driveways, or walkways than their calm appearance might suggest.
Ganoderma zonatum
Ganoderma zonatum is one of the most serious threats to palms in residential landscapes. It causes irreversible internal decay at the base of the trunk that compromises structural integrity, and there is currently no treatment or cure once the fungus is established. Falling fronds and boots
Dead frond bases, known as boots, can build up on tall palms and eventually fall, posing a real risk to people and vehicles below even when the palm itself is otherwise healthy. Regular maintenance and inspection help keep this risk in check.
