It is common to walk around a mature oak in Central Florida and see roots running along the surface of the soil rather than staying buried. Property owners often assume this means something is wrong, but in most cases, it does not.
Why surface roots happen
Florida's sandy soils drain quickly and often have a shallow water table, which encourages many species, including live oaks and laurel oaks, to develop a wider, shallower root system rather than growing deep. As a tree matures and the surrounding soil naturally erodes or compacts, roots that were once just below the surface can become visible over time. This is a normal growth pattern, not a defect.
When surface roots are not a concern
On their own, without any other symptoms, exposed roots are generally nothing to worry about. A tree with visible surface roots but a full, healthy canopy, no leaning, no cracking, and no dieback is typically doing exactly what it should for its species and site conditions.
When it is worth a closer look
Surface roots are worth having evaluated when they appear alongside other symptoms: a new or worsening lean, cracking or heaving soil at the base, canopy thinning, or dieback. These combinations can point to a different underlying issue, such as root damage or a girdling root, rather than the surface roots themselves being the problem.
A word about mulch and soil
It can be tempting to pile soil or mulch over exposed roots to hide them or level out the yard. This is one of the more common mistakes we see, and it can create new problems by suffocating the root system or encouraging decay at the base of the trunk. If the appearance of surface roots is a concern, talk to a certified arborist about options rather than covering them yourself.
